Developed as an initiative of India and France, the ISA was inaugurated formally during the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris in 2015.

The strategic vision of the ISA is to “Let us together make the sun brighter” and its management mandate is “Every home – no matter how far away – will have a light at home”. This extensive mission reflects the shared goal of the alliance to serve affordable and clean energy to everyone, especially in the developing world.

Membership and Structure

The ISA currently has over 120 members from around the world, although nearly all of its members are countries that lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The generation of power from the sun is feasible in these countries as they receive a lot of sunlight. The ISA works as an International organization and its head office is located in Gurugram city of India. The activities of the ISA Secretariat are handled by the Director General and the work of the organization is performed by him.

The ISA has a major program called the Global Solar Facility (GSF) which was established to mobilise funds for the development of the solar sector in member countries. The International Solar Alliance plays the very crucial role of addressing solar technologies and promoting energy change in the world today. The ISA is thus making essential contribution in the provision, security and sustainability of energy through the promotion of cooperative framework amongst the member countries and provision of financing for worthwhile projects in the field of solar energy.
