Punjab PSC (PPSC) Eligibility Criteria 2024 & Syllabus

The eligibility criteria for applicants are specified in the Punjab State Civil Services official notice. The eligibility requirements decide whether the applicant is able to attend for the examination. Hence, it is suggested for all the students who are sitting for the Punjab State Civil Services examination to verify the eligibility requirements before submitting the application form. There are various aspects that define the qualifying requirements include nationality, age restriction, educational qualification, and physical fitness. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to inspect each region attentively. Once the individual satisfies the eligibility conditions, then he or she may complete the Punjab State Civil Services application form. Candidates who successfully fill out the application form will subsequently be eligible to acquire the admission card. The Punjab State Civil Services examination is held to select candidates for different civil service positions that are given under the administration of the Punjab government.

Here we will look at the factors relating to the Eligibility criteria in the PPSC Examination. State Commission has specified about the eligibility criteria as:

  1. Nationality
  2. Qualification and
  3. Age
  4. Number of attempts

Qualifications:

it has 2 major points-

  1. The applicant must meet minimum educational qualification; He/ She should have at least degree in any field from a recognized university/ institution. However the candidate may be allowed to take the preliminary test before writing or while completing the degree. However, the applicant must show that he/she has completed the degree program in question so as to enable him/her sit for the Main Competitive Examination.
  2. In Prelims examination of the PPSC there is additional requirement that Candidates must fulfil as:
    1. Candidate must have passed either elective Punjabi or compulsory Punjabi language paper in class 10th.
    2. Or any other examination as per the orders of the government of Punjab.

Age limit

The upper age limit for all the categories of the candidates is prescribed by the Punjab State Civil Services (Appointment by Combined Competitive Examination) Rules, 2009, Punjab Civil Services (Executive Branch) Rules 1976, and other instructions issued by the government from time to time. By these rules, a candidate shall not be less than 21 years and shall not be more than 37 years of age as of the 1st day of January in the year in which the application for the Commission is due. That is, the applicant should have attained the age of 21 years but the age of 37 years and above should not be entertained.

  • The Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 42 years for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes of Punjab State only.
  • Upper age restriction may be relaxed to 33 years for Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes of the Punjab State only in respect of Punjab Police Service and Punjab Prisons Service.
  • Upper age limit also can be relaxed up to 45 years in case of employee of Punjab Govt. all teachers, employees of the Board/Corporation/Commission and Authorities, the all central and state government employees. But there is no age concession allowed for Punjab Police Service.
  • Ex-servicemen of Punjab Domicile may get age relaxation of up to three years.
  • Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 42 years for widow, divorced ladies and some other categories of female candidates. No age relaxation is permissible in case of women candidates for Punjab Police Service and Punjab Prisons Service.
  • Upper age may be relaxed up to 47 years in case of Physically Handicapped of Punjab only. But in case of Punjab Police Service and Punjab Prisons Service no age relaxation is possible.

Note:in some of the services the age limit is 21 years and 28 is the maximum age limit. Age is counted on the 1st January of the year they are applying for the examination. These services include:

ESSAY

  • Candidates will be required to write three short essays in English or Punjabi on specified topics. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in an orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

PUNJABI

  • Comprehension (Unseen Passage): An unseen passage followed by Questions to be answered for 10 Marks
  • Precis writing: Passage to be summarized to 1/3rd for 10 Marks
  • Letter writing: Letter to be written in 200 words for 10 Marks
  • Essay writing: Essay on any general topic in 400 words for 10 Marks

1. History:

  • History of the world: Events from 18th century; industrial revolution, world wars, redrawal of national boundaries, colonization, decolonization, political philosophies like Communism, Capitalism, Socialism etc. - their forms and effect on society.
  • Indian culture- Salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Modern Indian history from the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities and issues.
  • Socio-religious reform movements with special reference to Punjab.
  • The Freedom Struggle - its various stages and important contributors/contributions from different parts of the country with special reference to Punjab.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
  • History of Punjab: Ranjit Singh's rise to power, civil and military administration and relations with the British, Annexation of Punjab with special reference to the causes and consequences of the Anglo-Sikh wars.

2. Geography

  • Physical Geography: Salient features of world's physical geography. Distribution of key natural resources across the world (including South Asia and the Indian subcontinent); factors responsible for the location of primary, secondary, and tertiary sector industries in various parts of the world (including India)
  • Important Geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes, Tsunami, Volcanic activity, cyclone etc., geographical features and their location- changes in critical geographical features (including water-bodies and ice-caps) and in flora and fauna and the effects of such changes.
  • Geography of Punjab: Physiographic details of Punjab; Geomorphic features of Punjab, Punjab's strategic location with reference to International Border; Crops of Punjab; Modern concepts of Farming; Problems faced by agriculturists/ Issues in Agriculture: Depletion of ground water, etc

3. Society:

  • Salient features of Indian Society, Diversity of India.
  • Role of women and women's organization, population and associated issues, poverty and developmental issues, urbanization, their problems and their remedies
  • Effects of globalization on Indian society
  • Social empowerment, communalism, regionalism & secularism
  • Ethics and Society: Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.
  • Human Values - Role of family, society and educational institutions in inculcating values; lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders and reformers- Gautam Buddha, Mahavira, Kabir, Guru Nanak; Swami Vivekananda, Jyotibha Phule, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar and Mahatma Gandhi.

GENERAL STUDIES - II INDIAN CONSTITUTION & POLITY, GOVERNANCE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

GENERAL STUDIES - III ECONOMY, STATISTICS AND SECURITY ISSUES

1. INDIAN ECONOMY

  • Issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, development and employment; sustainable development; Inclusive growth and issues arising from it; Government Budgeting.
  • Major crops, cropping patterns in various parts of the country, different types of irrigation and irrigation systems; storage, transport and marketing of agricultural produce- issues and related constraints; e-technology in the aid of farmers; Issues related to direct and indirect farm subsidies and minimum support prices; Technology missions; economics of animal rearing.

This part will test the candidate's ability to draw conclusions from information presented in statistical, graphical or diagrammatical form and to interpret the same.
